Questions about supported devices
Q1.What instruments can this app be used with?
A1. It can be used together with a suitable cable with any pianos that support MIDI; such as Yamaha's Silent Pianos and Disklaviers. However, since this app is designed specifically for pianos, it does not support advanced parameters of more complex MIDI instruments. (For more details, please refer to Q2 and Q12 ). Yamaha recommends using the i-MX1 iphone MIDI interface. For other iPhone MIDI interfaces please refer to Q25.
Q2.Can this app be used with an Electone?
A2.It cannot be used properly with an Electone's normal settings. For details please refer to Q12.
Q3.Can this app be used with instruments not made by Yamaha?
A3.Yes.

You can create a Facebook account here.
You can create a Twitter account here.
Q5.If I use the guest account, what will happen to that recorded data and play information when I log in with my personal account?
A5.All of your recorded data and play information will be transferred to your account.
Questions about recording
Q6. I can't record MIDI data with the Yamaha i-MX1 cable.
A6.
Is the i-MX1 connected correctly? Make sure that the i-MX1's iPhone IN is connected to your instrument's OUT, and that the i-MX1's iPhone OUT is connected to your instrument's IN, as shown in the illustration to the right.
If the record screen says "No MIDI accessory connected" even though the i-MX1 is connected to your iPhone, it may be that there is a faulty connection between the i-MX1 and your iPhone. Try disconnecting the i-MX1 and then reconnecting it to your iPhone.
Q7.I can't record audio data.
A7.This app cannot record audio data.
Questions about playback
Q8.There's no sound from my instrument.
A8. When you wish to play back from your instrument, select "MIDI Inst." in the Play screen. Also make sure iPhone and your instrument is connected correctly. Please check A6.
Q9.There's no sound from my iPhone.
A9.When you wish to play back from your iPhone, disconnect i-MX1, or with i-MX1 connected, select "Built-in Synth" in the Play screen. Also make sure that the volume setting of your iPhone is set loud enough for you to hear.
Q10.Can the recorded data also be played back from a different instrument than used when recording?
A10.Any instrument that supports MIDI IN can play back the data. However when the data is played back on a different instrument, please be aware that it might not play back in the same way as when recorded
Questions about the playback sound
Q11.The sound changes when I play back the recorded data on a Silent Piano.
A11.Please be aware that playback using digital sound will inevitably differ from the sound of an acoustic piano.
Q12.When I play back the recorded data on a digital piano, the recorded data is played using different sounds.
A12.The sound used for playback will differ depending on the type of instrument you're using and on the settings of that instrument, as well as the operations you performed when recording.
If your instrument is designed to transmit a program change (a type of MIDI command) when you operate its panel to switch sounds (as is the case for most Yamaha electronic musical instruments), you can proceed as follows to record your sound selection as well: Press the record button -> Use the panel to select the desired sound -> Perform. This procedure will cause your sound selection to be recorded as well, ensuring that the playback will occur with the sound you used when recording.
If your instrument is not designed to transmit a program change when you operate its panel to switch sounds (this is the case for Electone), it is likely that the sound selection and effects will be in a different state than they were during recording. This is an unavoidable consequence of the instrument's design.
Q13.When I play back recorded data from my iPhone, the sound is different than when I recorded it on my instrument.
A13.When playing back from your iPhone (unless you recorded the panel sound selection using the procedure described in A12), playback will use the sound of the instrument specified by "Instrument" in the center of the Play screen. Hence playback may use a different sound than the sound of your instrument. Since you can play back using a variety of sounds, you can enjoy trying out different possibilities. Please be aware that the sound of the iPhone software synthesizer and that of your instrument will always differ, therefore the sound will always be slightly different even if an identically-named sound is selected.
Q14.The sound changes when I upload my performance to YouTube.
A14.When you upload a performance to YouTube, the MIDI data you performed on your instrument is converted to audio data. This is done using a special sound engine located on the server. Hence the sound will differ from that of your instrument and the soft synthesizer in the app. In addition, the audio data is compressed when uploading to YouTube, which may lower the quality of the sound.
Questions about uploading to YouTube
Q15.I can't upload to YouTube.
A15.
Are you logged in? You can only upload from Piano Diary to YouTube if you are logged in to Twitter or Facebook.
Is your iPhone connected to the Internet? You can't upload to YouTube while you're offline.

Questions about other functions
Q16.How can I delete a recorded song?
A16.Select the "Days" tab, and tap "Edit" in the upper right. Tap the red circle shown at the left of the song list, and a delete button will appear. Tap the delete button to delete the selected song.
Q17.How can I search for a song title?
A17.Select the "Days" tab and scroll to the top of the screen. A search box is shown at the top.
Q18.What type of effect is provided by Reverb?
A18.Reverb adds reverberation to the sound, creating the sensation that you're performing in a hall.
Q19.What type of effect is provided by Chorus?
A19.Chorus adds spaciousness to the sound.
Q20.Last-used Device in the Profile screen is not shown.
A20.Please be aware that depending on the design of your instrument, this might not be shown.
Q21.My actual practice time does not match the performance time recorded by the app. A21.The performance time is recorded as the time during which performance data was being input from your instrument via the i-MX1. The time is recorded even if you didn't save the performance data. However even though you might have been practicing, time during which the piano's keys were not pressed (i.e., time during which no sound was being input to the app) is not recorded. For example, time you spent looking through the music score or writing something on the score is not captured.
Q22.Can I make a CD with the recorded data?
A22.This app cannot create a CD from the recorded data.
Q23.Can the recorded data be exported outside the application?
A23.Recorded data cannot be exported from this app.
